How to use Jamaican black castor oil.
Edited 6th January 2015
Jamaican black castor oil is a type of castor oil which is prepared by using a Jamaican ancient method. It contains a lot of fatty acids and phytochemicals which are believed to offer many skin and hair benefits. According to many scientific sources, it is the only known source of a fatty acid called ricinoleic acid, an omega -9- fatty acid. This fatty acid nourishes the hair and is also said to kill some viruses and fungi. As these micro-organisms have been linked to some causes of hair loss, it can therefore contribute to hair growth. It is also said to retain moisture in the scalp thus preventing dry scalp.
I discovered Jamaican black castor oil online in 2010 when I decided to grow my hair. So many people were raving about it and I decided to give it a try too! The thickness of my hair greatly improved but I fell off using it for the most of 2011 – 2013 and my hair wasn’t as thick anymore. I reintroduced it into my regimen in 2014 and I think my hair is better for it.
I usually use the Lavender Jamaican black castor oil (Lavender JBCO) and Jamaican black castor oil with argan oil serum instead of the regular plain JBCO. I apply the Lavender JBCO on my scalp on Friday night (with coconut oil + hemp oil on my hair strands). I leave this overnight and wash it out in the morning. I follow up by deep conditioning my hair with my regular deep conditioner. After rinsing out my deep conditioner, I apply Jamaican black castor oil with argan oil serum on my scalp and leave this in.
However, those are only 2 ways to use it. Other ways to use Jamaican black castor oil include:
– use it as a prepoo oil alone or mixed with another oil (e.g coconut oil) or conditioner. Apply heat. I would advise you mixed it because JBCO is pretty THICK and VISCOUS.
– mix it with your protein conditioner and apply heat;
– mix it with your moisturizing deep conditioner and apply heat;
– use it as a sealant after moisturizing your hair. (Use it sparingly because it might weigh your hair down too much)
– use it as a scalp oil during the week.. Be careful though because it’s very sticky and can weigh your hair down too much. (That’s why I only like to use it when I deep condition! Besides its sticky nature, I love it so much!)

Hi, Dr fomsky I started using Jamaican castor oil last two month and I notice my hair breaking. I don’t know why. I use d method of hot oil treatment, by applying it on my scalp and I use Cap. Then I wash it off. Please I need your assistant.
Jamaican black castor oil is not the best oil for a hot oil treatment. It’s better to use it only for your scalp or mix with your conditioner. Coconut, olive or avocado oils are better for hot oil treatments.
Pls,how do I get this oil. I liv in Ibadan.10ks
Hello Ayo. I’m currently not selling any till February
you can fet it on ebay
I just started using J.Black castor oil, from what I have gather from the blogs, sizzling mommy, and watching personal video posted on You Tub, I have heard nothing but positive feed back and remarks on this products, I decided to purchased a bottle today, 2/10/2012 I’m 2 days in use the J. black castor oil I will keep you up date, right now my hair is currently thin and a little damaged from wearing weaves off and on I plan on pre-poo, and co-washing through this hair journey. Thank you for all the information you provided on your wed page.
You’re welcome Angela: I hope the JBCO works for you. Co-washing is good because it can help you stretch between relaxers. Tk care 🙂
Hi Dr. Fomsky,
I am new to JBCO. I have been reading alot of reviews about this product. I live in California and there are no beauty supplies stores here that carry this particular product. However, I want to know if I purchase JBCO can I use it just bt itself or do I have to purchase the pimento oil as well. I read that the pimento oil was good for hair growth. By the way, I usually go to the hair salon every two wks, so I was considering on using the JBCO two or three days before my next hair appointment.
Hi Toni, I’m glad you could stop by. You can use it just by itself. However, many girls complain of shedding when used that way. The other alternative is to mix it with your conditioner or another oil like olive oil. You don’t need the pimento oil: I’ve never used it although I hear good things about it. And yes, because JBCO is a very viscous oil, it is not a bad idea to use it just before your salon service. That way, it won’t weigh your hair down. Also, considering that you live in relatively warm California. Do take care 🙂 I hope I’ve been of help.
Hi there Dr. Fomsky I noticed that you said as a suggestion to mix the castor oil with a conditioner. I use As I Am Coconut CoWash Cleansing Conditioner and I am using olive oil for my deep oil treatments. When I incorporate the Castor oil into my regimen how much of the castor oil should I use in a mixture? I big chopped in May so right now I’m at TWA length. Thank you in advance.
Hi Jasmine. Sorry I didn’t respond immediately. 🙂
The amount of castor oil I use depends on the thickness of the conditioner I’m using and whether or not I’m using other oils. When I use Kenra moisturizing conditioner, I use about 3-4 teaspoons of oil and it still remains thick enough. If I’m mixing it with other oils, I use 1 teaspoon each of castor oil, olive oil, avocado oil and safflower oil. If the consistency of the conditioner you’re using is light, you can use about 1 to 2 teaspoonfuls. Also, since you have a TWA, you might not be using the same amount of conditioner I’m using so 1-2 teaspoonfuls might actually be enough. Hope this helps.
Hi, My name is Michelle I’m from Chicago and I just started using JBCO and I was wondering if it’s safe to use on relaxed hair. I’ve heard that it’s not.
My hair is relaxed and I’ve been using it for a while so i guess it’s safe enough.

Hello Dr_fromsky I just purchased JBCO and am a little unsure on how often should I use it. Did you mention that I could mix with olive oil and use heat with it? If so how much of each oil and how long should I sit under the heat dryer? Also how many times a week? When I do this regiment should I still apply to my scalp in between deep conditioners? Btw, my hair is fine and thin. Not blessed with strong coarse hair like yours. Thank you
Hello Sasa. How are you? The frequency of how you use JBCO depends on which way you choose to use it. You should use it every time you deep condition (which might be 1-3 times a week depending on how much time you have on your hands). Yes you can mix it with olive oil and use heat with it. You can either mix the JBCO with your deep conditioner OR apply it to your scalp and then your deep conditioner to your hair strands.
I would recommend that if you’re mixing JBCO with olive oil (or any other oil of your choice), you use 1 ml of oil with 3-4 ml of JBCO. I also think that you should sit under the dryer for a minimum of 15 minutes (I always aim to sit under the dryer for at least 15 minutes).
During the week, you can lightly apply it to your scalp every other day. I don’t think it’s necessary for you to apply it to your hair. Take care
Hello first of all I would like to say that I’m not trying to be racist or anything like that by the following question: I am wondering if black castor oil is okay to use for all types of hair , I have wavy hair I’m just asking to make sure since all the videos I’ve seen on YouTube mostly consist of African American people so I’m just wondering if it only works for that type of hair?
I understand but hair is hair so I guess it should be okay for you to use it too. 🙂
Oh okay thanks hopefully it works for me too I already ordered it, Ive been thinning since 16 I’m 19 now but thank God I still have a good amount of hair its just thin and my hair line has receded a lot but I pray to God this castor oil will help! Thanks Again!
Hi doc i am from Kenya and wondering if there is anyone selling the Jamaican black caster oil in Kenya. I have read that it does well with hair and i am tempted to use it.
Hi Florence. You can search for Nakumatt and Tricia’s Naturals Market Place on Google.
Hello Dr_fomsky thank you so much for your feedback and forgive me for mispelling your name in previous question. Hope you have great holiday season. Regards
Hello again Dr_fomsky I used the JBCO along with olive oil and sat under dryer for thirty mins then I rinsed my hair. I was wondering if I was supposed to shampoo it after? I only shampooed it before using the oils as deep conditioner.
Dear Dr. Fomsky, I do appreciate your tips about hair growth. I use Organic Olive Oil shampoo and conditioner plus the leave in conditioner. While I use their hair mayonnaise and carrot oil cream when I need to steam my hair. Pls how do I prepoo my hair and can I mix it with my organic products during steaming. My hair is breaking so bad and thining out..- used to have very full, long and thick hair. Now am the complete opposite and my front line hair has almost disappeared…what do I do please.
Hi there,I just bought the Jamaican black castor oil no salt and I have no idea how to use it i’m a guy in my 30’s and my hair is thinning, do i apply straight to my scalp and for how long before I wash it off?
how many times a week?
I know for myself when I apply castor oil I make sure I deep condition for about 15 minutes after I also put As I am CoWash on top of that and sit with a plastic cap on my head and go under my dryer. Afterwards I wash it out. I followed up with a mixture of oils to lightly massage my scalp, not too much that it would start running down. I’ve been doing this technique since July of 2012 and that area that was balding that I had before, as far as I can tell is gone and now covered with hair. Hope this helps
Thanks for the response Ms Jazz! That’s great about your bald spot covering up!

Chuma, it does work. Have you tried ordering from SAMs Caribbean website?

Hello I am transitioning to natural hair. My edges are thin from my last relaxer and I need to grow them. When I got jbco i had done a pre poo twice and washed and conditioned after and also deep conditioned
. I have use the oil on my dry or damped hair at night and morning and put on my satin cap at night. I got Ghana braiding two weeks ago and the edges part has all ready rose up but I still use the oil on my edges also with African Shea butter but I don’t know if that helps. What I am asking is am I using it right? Am I using it with the right products. I need to know if I am using it correctly
I think you’re using it right Yewande dear. From your comment, I’m not sure if you’re using it on your entire scalp. You could also do that too.
I’m only 15 so I don’t really know what I am doing . I’m not really knowing a difference maybe I am being impatient I order the oil on amazon and got it on September 16 and started using it since . What regimen do you recommend ?
Dr fomsky, hello am tiwalade from lagos nigeria. A male…av heard a lot about JBCO and am willing to try it cos ma aunty is returninas so I aske her to get for me. All I wanna ask is that is it also gud for males cos my side hair and ma forehead hair is moving back and am still tomuch yung age 23…. Pls I need to knw if using it will really help me regaining ma lost hair…expecting your reply. Dr.fomsky
So sorry to hear this..I think that it could help. If it doesn’t, then I suggest that you try mixing some essential oils (e.g rosemary oil, lavender oil, thyme oil, cedar wood oil, etc) with castor oil. This also helps. Products containing saw palmetto can also help.. If these don’t work, you might want to see a dermatologist: he/she might prescribe a product called minoxidil or Rogaine.
MY NAME IS VIRGINIA,I LIVE IN MEMPHIS TN. I JUST STARTED USING LIQUID GOLD HAIR GROWTH OIL. MY HAIR IS SALT AND PEPPER AND I DON”T HAVE ANY MORE CHEMICALS IN MY HAIR AND I FLATIRON MY HAIR WITH COCONUT OIL. WILL I BE ABLE TO USE THE BLACK CASTOR OIL ALSO. MY HAIR IS VERY THIN SO I HAD TO START TAKING CARE OF IT MYSELF. CAN YOU GIVE ME ANY ADVICE OR CORRECTION. THANKS. I JUST PURCHASED THE BLACK CASTOR OIL ALSO.
Hi Virginia. It’s not a good idea to flat iron with coconut oil. It’s best to use a heat protectant. However, you should only flat iron your hair occasionally and on the lowest heat possible. You can use apply the liquid gold oil on your scalp every evening or every other evening, alternating with the JBCO.
What is the best kinds of conditioner to mix with this product and for daily use do you mix it with anything?
Any good moisturising conditioner will do. For daily use, you can use it on its own or mix it with grape seed or jojoba oil if you don’t want it too thick.
Hey Dr. Fomzky. I purchased jbco and extra virgin coconut oil approximately a year ago and have been using them faithfully. Well there is a tremendous change in the volume of the hair. However, my edges are still very very thin. Any suggestions?
Have you tried essential oils? They are proven to help some people in reversing hair loss. You can also try blending some onions and applying the juice on the area once a week before washing your hair.
My daughter is four years old her hair stay very A lot I can put hair grease blue magic in her hair that next day it’s very very dry what can I use on my daughter hair to make it grow I’m tired of ponytail and hair bows
Please help me .
Hello Christina. Natural hair is inherently dry so you need to deep condition her hair regularly. You can apply a conditioner to her hair and leave it on for at least 20 minutes. You can rinse it out and then apply a leave-in conditioner or moisturizer and it will not be as dry anymore. http://www.sizzelle.com/hair-products-in-nigeria/Kids-hair-products
Thank you I will try that on my daughter hair. What can I get for my daughter edges to grow
It depends on how old she is. If she is less than 6, then you can use Jamaican black castor oil on her edges. If she is over 6, you can also combine this with essential oils.
Dr.fomsky I have natural hair I won’t to know what can I do to get my hair back to the way I had it
I advise that you need to condition your hair weekly and moisturise it daily. This will help to keep your hair well moisturised and reduce breakage.
What kind of condition do I use on my hair
There are so many natural hair conditioners you can use. These are only a few examples http://www.sizzelle.com/hair-products-in-nigeria/Natural-hair-products/Natural-hair-deep-conditioners/Natural-hair-moisturizing-conditioners

Hello Dr.Fomsky!I live in Kenya, where can I get the jamaican black castor oil?
I’m not sure where to purchase in Kenya. Have you done a google search? Thank you Bee
Hello bee, you can get it @ super cosmetics beauty shop, mama Ngina street, behind hilton hotel’s lyntons pharmacy.Nairobi.
Hi Dr. Fomsky, My hair is relaxed, and I use Aveeno pure renewal sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. Can JBCO be mixed with the conditioner? If so, how much do I add to the conditioner.
Yes it can be mixed with any conditioner. If your hair is thick, 2 tablespoons should be ok. If your hair is not very thick, then I think 1 tablespoon should be adequate. Thank you.
Hello Dr.Fomsky!I live in Kenya,is it possible for a delivery via dhl for jamaican black castor oil my hair is quite light and i can’t find any one selling it here in kenya
I am using a flat iron on my hair after transitioning from a perm. I LOVE JBCO!! I have now cut all perm out of my hair and I’m wearing a very short hair cut straightening it with a flat iron. Can I use flat iron with jbco or should I put a heat protectorant on before flat ironing? is Chi Silk Infusion a good heat protectorant?
Hi Carolynne. Great to hear you cut off all your perm. It is not advisable to flat iron your hair with oils including JBCO. I think you should use a heat protectant. Chi silk infusion is an excellent one!
hello,Am from kenya how do i get the JBCO here?
Hi Caroline. I apologize for not responding earlier. I am not so sure. Have you tried doing a google search? Thanks.
Hello Dr.Fomsky,my hair does not grow long please how would you help me am in Kenya.and have bald spot at the top.help
Hi Caroline. I am pretty certain that it grows but the problem is that your hair breaks more than it grows and that is why it appears that your hair is not growing. I advise that you deep condition your hair weekly and moisturize it every evening. ORS hair products should be easy to find in Kenya. So you can start with these. Thanks.
my9 months baby hair is not growing atall.can I use jbco mixed with coconut oil and extra virgin olive oil.and after washing d oils off can i still apply Jamaican castor oil with argan oil serum on her hair
I apologize for my delayed response. Yes you can use JBCO mixed with coconut oil on her hair. The only things you should stay away from are essential oils.
I want to also ask if it is not to harsh for her and also if it will not affect her negatively
No it won’t dear Rita.
pls prescribe baby shampoo and conditioner 2 use.thanks
Jason Naturals makes good shampoos and conditioners which you can find at Sizzelle.com or Healthplus pharmacies in Lagos.
Can u add jbco to your shampoo instead of ur conditioner for hair growth
Hi Rosario, you can JBCO to your shampoo. However, it will probably not have much effect on hair growth because we usually don’t leave shampoo on our hair for a long time. Thanks for your comment!
Dr.Fomsky, i got the Jbco in Kenya am very lucky.Sunny isle Jbco.
I am so happy for you!!!
Sorry about the other post. I hit enter by mistake and it posted. 🙁 Anyway, I used JBCO last night for the first time. I’m using it for thinning hair. I washed my hair this morning and a ton of hair fell out. More than usually what falls out. Is shedding normal at first when using JBCO?
Yes it does cause shedding for some people. Use it for a week or two and see if it settles down. If it doesn’t, then you might have to discontinue it.
Thanks so much for your reply regarding the shedding. Since I’m having a lot of shedding, how often do you think I should use it? I don’t think I want to use it every night, if I’m going to have a lot of shedding at first. Do you think using it 2-3 times a week would be good?
Yes 2 to 3 times is a good idea
Thanks again for your reply. I’ll let you know how it goes.
CAN JBCO OIL BE USED ON A 6 MONTHS BABY, OR WHICH OIL DO U ADVICE CUS MY BABY IS LOOSING SO MUCH HAIR.
Yes it can be used on a baby. If she’s losing a lot of hair, try applying coconut oil, cover with a shower cap and leave it for 30 minutes to an hour. Then shampoo and condition her hair.
can i use jamican black castor oil with lavender on my relaxed hair?
Yes you can.
