Suggestions for protein and moisturizing conditioners

I didn’t want to make my last post about the difference between protein and moisturizing conditioners too long so I decided to break it into two. Here are some suggestions adapted from Hairlista’s favorite conditioners. I’ve added some of my own suggestions too.

      Moisturizing conditioners

  3. Lustrasilk Shea Butter  and Mango Cholesterol (I’ve also used this conditioner at the beginning of my hair journey. It’s okay but I don’t think it might made my hair as soft as I would like it to be. I hear good stuff about it though and I might revisit it one day!)

  5. Silk Elements Mega Silk Moisturizing Treatment
  6. Creme of Nature Nourishing & Strengthening Treatment

I hope this post has helped someone out there to make a choice. Remember to use only LIGHT PROTEIN CONDITIONERS weekly. If you want to use moderate to heavy protein conditioners, use them once a month or even once in two months.

    Hi! I absolutely adore your blog 🙂 Would you consider Pantene Beautiful Lengths Deep Conditioner a moisturizing or light/heavy protein deep conditioner. It has the ingredients of a moisturizing conditioner but it makes my hair feel hard and doesn't give it nearly enough slip. Thanks for your time!

    Awww Lexie, thanks so much for the compliment! Pantene is a moisturizing conditioner and has no protein in its ingredient list. I'm surprised it doesn't give you enough slip because that's one conditioner that gave me wonderful slip. I'm not using it much these days only because I think it was making my hair break. (I've not confirmed this yet though).
    You might want to try Keracare humecto: it's also a moisturizing conditioner. The only downside is that it contains mineral oil. If that doesn't bother you, you could try it.

    Hi Dr.fomsky i have been looking at alot of websites concerning hair but this beats it and seeing your picture below tops what am looking for.ok here is my problem my hair is permed right now and for the past 6weeks i have been conditioning at least once a week i uses lekair cholesterol.i also use doogro oil lastly i also use organics hair livin in.the problem is my hair is still breaking like crazy now it has broken off all the back and the longest section is the front.i feel frustrated now like crazy.i want hair like yours i know its a journey but i seriously need help.p.s i also take pregnancy vitamins supposed to help??ok waiting for your reply thx alot

      Lekair cholesterol has some collagen protein in addition to the cholesterol. This makes it balanced conditioner. How does your hair feel? Mushy or hard? If it feels hard, you might to deep condition with something moisturizing. If it’s mush, you probably need some protein. Do you see hair bulbs? It could also be shedding.     I recently attempted to get my hair (uncolored but naturally black) lightened to a light brown. My stylist attempted to lighten my hair twice with no success. Well, two weeks later, I needed a relaxer so I went in to get one. My stylist put the mildest relaxer on my hair and after combing back through it noticed my hair was coming out and immediately washed it out. Ever since then, my hair comes out every time I comb, brush, or use my fingers on it. Is there anything I can do to restore my hair? I was getting relaxers every 5-6 weeks.

    I purchased Ion restore conditioner and was thinking about buying a hair dryer that you sit under. Please let me know your thoughts. I’ve never experienced this. Thanks.

      Hi GG. I’m sorry about your hair. 🙁 Your hair might be overprocessed and you’ll need a lot of deep conditioning [at least once or twice a week] so it’s a good thing you bought a conditioner. The only true solution, though is for the damaged hair to be replaced by new hair. This time around, take care of any new hair you have coming in dear. 🙂 I haven’t used any of the Ion conditioners but most of them have good reviews… it’s also a good idea you get a hair dryer to maximise your deep conditioning. If you can’t get a dryer, try getting a heating cap. For now, I also think you should hold off relaxers till your hair gets in better shape.

        Thanks for the reply. Do I just deep condition after I shampoo? Would you suggest protein treatments as well and if so how often?

        I’m thinking shampoo and deep condition twice a week. Do I need to use clarifying shampoos or just a shampoo? Sorry for all the questions but prior to now, i’ve never been a big hair person:(

          Hi GG. I really don’t mind the questions: every blogger looks forward to comments and questions. It makes me know that all my writing is not in vain. Anyways, I think it’s better to start with deep conditioning 2x a week. Once after shampooing and the other time, just do a co-wash with any regular conditioner. If your hair responds well, then you can add a protein treatment before your shampoo. Don’t worry.. you’ll be fine. 😉

            Thanks for the advice. Since my hair problem, I have been doing a lot of research and such. Would you suggest pre-pooing before shampooing or is there any benefit to this? I know my new growth is going to get unmanageable at some point so I am trying to learn what I can do to avoid relaxers until my hair is strong enough again.

            Just ordered a hooded dryer…. I am ready to get this hair journey going.

            Yes GG. i suggest pre-pooing because it helps to reduce the drying effects of a shampoo: that’s what i was talking about when I said protein treatments before shampooing. However, I thinnk you should concentrate on just moisturizing conditioners for a while till your hair improves because proteins could also cause breakage if your hair is not well moisturized. As for stretching your relaxer, there are several things you could do: for one thing, regular deep conditioning will help to keep the new growth a little soft. Rollersetting is also very good for stretching relaxers. Braids out too. If all fails, you could blowdry the roots

    I wanted to keep you updated. I went to my new stylist for a deep conditioning earlier today. My hair continued to come out when she combed through it. I had to suck it up as bad as I hated to and let her cut off about 5-6″ of my hair. After she shaped it, I no longer have hair coming out. I am still going to work on using as little heat as possible. Happy holidays!

      I did the same thing as u I been struggling for one year losing hair still but couple days ago I found a product that helped me a lot argadir argan oil expensive but works I would like to know of u hair is doing ok now? I still feel that I need help amd especially talking to someone who had the same problem thank u!!!!

    Hi i love your website i think its excellent and so NEEDED !!! I am wondering the best way to lok after my hair, i’m mixed raced and have a ginger afro. I wash my hair once every 2 months and get simply shampoo and conditioner it. Now I really want to grow my hair BIG !! yes my hair does break when I brush it.     I’m surprised you categorized Gentle Touch Cholesterol DC as moderate protein. I don’t even think it contains protein. Why is that?

      Hi Christabel. I believe that the last time I used it, there was keratin in the ingredient list. I’ll need to get a tub to check if the formulation has changed.
