Suggested hair regimen to grow relaxed hair (if you can’t do it at home!)

Recently, I got a comment from a lovely reader of this blog. She said, ” I’ve read all your hair stuff a couple of times. I’ve tried following some of the guidelines but frankly I’m still clueless. I still have frizzy, thinning, unmanageable hair. Can’t u please just give me a list of what to buy and when to use it and so on that I can at least try to follow religiously? P/s: I’m almost always on weave-ons cause my hair is so terrible. Also it’s harmattan season which is very dry. Again, I can’t do braids cause it chops all my front hair. Help!!.” Has this been your problem? You’ve tried following my tips but they still don’t work. Or you don’t even know where to start from. I’ve decided to draw up a simple regimen for you. Many of the products I use are not always easily available so I’m going to recommend products that I believe are easy to find wherever you live. I promise to recommend only products that I’ve personally used and liked. To make it even easier, just go to a salon and have your hair done there.

1. Find a good salon that the hairdresser is willing to listen to your instructions.

2. Plan not to fix any weaveon or hair extension for the next 6 months.

3. Get a relaxer touch-up and request for a hair trim to get rid of the dead ends. Use Avlon Affirm FiberGuard Conditioning Normal Creme Relaxer.(that’s my current relaxer). If you can’t find it anywhere, try Profectiv Relax and Refresh (I’ve used it in the past and I love it) or ORS Olive Oil Relaxer.

4. Pick a hair day, preferably Saturday. You should go to the salon once a week but if your hair is still looking good, 2 weeks is okay. Apply Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise Treatment (as a prepoo). Leave it in for at least 20 minutes before you leave home.

5. When you get to the salon, wash your hair with Organic Root Stimulator Uplifting Shampoo.

6. Deep condition with Africa’s best Organics Cholesterol Tea-tree oil.

7. For your leave-ins, use Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Mousse, Wrap/Set. Or you can even use Lottabody (I know it’s old school but I’ve used it several times when I go to the salon and it makes my hair bouncy!).

8. To seal in your set, you can use Africa’s best Organics Herbal tea tree gro. I like it because it’s free of mineral oil!

9. When you get home, use S-curl activator as your moisturizer once or twice a day. This reader complained about the harmattan. If you live under dry weather conditions, don’t skip this step at least once a day. When I moisturize once a day, I prefer to moisturize at night to allow adequate absorption. However, if your hair still looks and feels well hydrated, you could moisturize every other day. If S-curl is not available near you, use Profectiv Healthy Ends Anti-Split End & Deep Repair. I used it in the beginning of my hair journey and I liked it. Don’t forget to use your moisturizer very lightly so your hair doesn’t get frizzy. You could also watch my video on How I moisturize and seal my hair so you can see exactly how I do it.

10. Seal your moisturizer with extra virgin olive oil or Africa’s best Organics Herbal tea tree gro. Please don’t use Goya olive oil!! Use only a little amount so that your hair doesn’t get weighed down.

11. Use a satin scarf to sleep at night to help keep your style and retain your hair’s moisture content. Again, if you’re experiencing dry weather, applying a few drops of olive oil before using your scarf is a good idea. It will keep your hair shiny.

Leave me a comment or ask a question if you need further clarification or more suggestions. Feel free to print it out and take it shopping with you or put it on your wall to remind you what you need to do. Take care.

This is really very informative. Thanks Dr Ufuoma. Plus , M̶̲̅ strangely more comfortable knowing M̶̲̅ not the only one who has very hard-to-manage hair.
    This information here is priceless.

    • Dr_fomsky says:

You’re welcome Dami. It’s funny that sometimes when we go through stuff, we think that we’re the only one. How’s your hair doing?

      • Dami says:

My hair is better, thank you. I will be honest, i have slacked a little (ok….truthfully, a lot) in taking care of my hair. But i fully intend to buy ALL the products listed above and start all over again.

        • Dr_fomsky says:

I’m happy to hear that your hair improved. I know how it is to slack off. EVen I have slacked off in recent months but if you stick to the basics, your hair will thrive no matter what. If you can’t do it yourself, head to the salon. That’s why I drew up a post like this. Have a nice day Dami

Hi, just a call from my sister in-law tell me she had check out your site and that it is very informative. She promised to make use of the advice here and post comments about any question or progress with her hair.
Thanks once again for the info.

Thank you so much for your recommendation, I just started yesterday, I will let you know how it goes, I have complete confidence in you.

  6. deedee says:

Is organics cholestol a mostorizing or protien deep conditioner. is there an alternative to the Ors Mayo? Does it havve to used as a prepoo and can you use it overnight?

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Hi Deedee, if you’re talking about Organics Cholesterol tea tree oil, it’s a moisturizing conditioner. Alternative to Organics Mayo is Organic root stimulator olive oil replenishing conditioner. Although it’s a protein conditioner, it’s very moisturizing so you can use it as a prepoo or after-shampoo conditioner: it’s up to you. I don’t recommend you using it overnight except you have very unmanageable or thick hair. You don’t want your hair too mushy. Thanks for stopping by Deedee! 🙂

  7. Ifai says:

You said not to use Goya Olive oil. Is there any reason for it? It says it’s extra virgin olive oil and is readily available here in Nigeria.

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Well Ifai, you’re right about Goya being called extra virgin olive oil but I’m 70% sure it’s not. Pure extra virgin oil has a greenish tint. The good thing is that you can find extra virgin olive oil besides Goya at any good supermarket in Nigeria. I usually buy mine in Spar/Park n Shop in Lagos.

  8. kuchi says:

Hi Dr Fomsky where can i get S-curl activator in Lagos because I have looked all over for it. please could you recommend any good leave in conditioners (creamy ones) the liquid ones are justa piece of work. Thanks

  9. Ifai says:

Thanks for the clarification on the Goya olive oil. The irony is that my hair loves that very oil for everything: pre-poo, sealing, whatever. However, I will check out Park N Shop or Everyday supermarket in Port Harcourt to see what i can find. Pls what exactly is Emergency 911 – a leave-in conditioner? I am currently using it as a braid spray by mixing with water, glycerine and olive oil

    • Dr_fomsky says:

I always say, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. If goya works for you, my sister use it: there’s no crime. Emergency 911 can be a leave-in or moisturizer, depending on how u use it. Make sure it’s protein-free cos using it everyday can break your hair.

  10. missshayee says:

Ok! Dr. you have done a fabulous job with this blog. Definitely educated me on a lot of hair issues, now my friends ask me endless questions about how to care for their hair. I have a question though. I normally do a relaxer treatment every 10-12 weeks ‘cos it’s real coarse….
Question: How do i maintain or (condition my hair) if i have a weave on my hair for about 3 weeks? also, how best can i take care of my hair if i’ve got braids on?

This is because i think i can’t carry my natural hair for so long before my next relaxer treatment. Or what do you think? Please reply soon!

Hi, luv ur blog, its has lots of good informatn. Would like 2 know if its possible for one to carry her relaxed hair 4 6 months without touchups, especially in a country like nigeria.
Also, is it possible for one to follow d suggestd hair regimen at hme, without going 2 d salon, cos d hair stylists arnd my area aren’t quite good at takn care of one’s hair.
Do u knw where d aforementiond products can be gotten in ph. Pls reply soon. Thanks a lot.

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Thanks for your compliments on the blog. Yes it is possible to carry your hair for 4 – 6 months. It just depends on you. I will soon do a post on how to stretch your relaxer for as long as possible. With regards to the regimen, yes you can do it at home if you wish.
Most of those products I mentioned can be found in any good beauty shop. Check SOFO PHARMACY on Onne road I think off Olu Obasanjo in GRA. It is in the same building with Everyday supermarket.
      Hugs

  13. babestell says:

God will bless you and increase your portion for the good job you are doing. I just relaxed and I plan to follow this schedule th the letter, its much easier and realistic for me. 6 months without weavon sha go hard. Does this regimen care for front her too. Mine is really scanty

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Hello Babestell. I just realized that I skipped responding to your comment. Thanks for your compliments. For the front hair, you can simply apply oils like castor oil, pimento oil, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil, rosemary oil on your scalp from time to time and massage it in.

  14. Veronica says:

Hi doc, how r u doing? iv missed sending u ridiculously long comments but I have a question that needs answering and u are the best person to answer since you have recommended it here. See I found the herbal tea tree grow lite conditioner which is to be used as a moisturiser right? I bought 3 jars as it was on special but wen I was looking through the ingredient list I found something called microcrystalline wax. What is this and is it ‘safe’ to use on our hair. The sound of it made me scared that it has the same properties as mineral oil or petroletum. So I jus gOogled ur site and the product name. Ur recommendation makes me a believer of dis product again as I had stopped using it after tryin it once. So doc can you please enlighten me with your hair wisdom…

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Hello Veronica, missed you too 🙂 . I recommended it to be used as a sealant not a moisturizer. I just googled that microcrystalline wax and learnt that it’s made from petroleum! Thanks for drawing my attention to that. I have used it to seal in the past and I liked it. Now, I’m not too sure. You can use any natural oil to seal then. Take care dear!

  15. Cindi says:

    R
New Affirm relaxer after 90 days but think the stylist left in too Long and put relaxer on previously relaxed hair done inFebruary. Hair is f lat no body and thin. Am trying to grow it again. I like relaxed better than natural hair. What can I use to hold a style and to keep it moisturizer.have you ever used hennae on your relaxed hair. Mine is greying and . I’d like to cover it with red henna.thank you.

    • Dr Fomsky says:

Hi Cindi, so many questions but I’ll answer the ones I can. To hold a style, I would suggest that you use a mousse or setting lotion. Lottabody makes some good ones. I have used henna on my relaxed hair in the past but I don’t remember it actually covering up the grey strand that I had at the time.

  16. iuleha virologist says:

    I like this regimen. thanks.
