My homemade deep conditioner and black shampoo experience!

I finally took out my weave this weekend and I decided to use all natural ingredients for my hair treatments. I recently read about the Greenhouse effect from The real queens website. One of the things the website owner recommends is the use of natural products as much as possible to achieve healthy hair. So I decided to give it a try: I figured I wasn’t going to lose anything (I made sure I had my backup products just in case… Wink)

The first thing I did was to do a prepoo with my very own protein treatment: My homemade deep conditioner with palm oil, avocado and yogurt.

     So why did I decide to use palm oil for my homemade deep conditioner? In my little experience with conditioners, I’ve observed that conditioners containing the ingredient cetyl alcohol usually make my hair feel smooth and silky. According to hair literature, cetyl alcohol:

  • provides emulsification and thickening properties, further enhancing the product’s texture and ability to evenly coat the hair.
  • acts as a barrier for water loss. This keeps both hair and scalp moisturized, preventing dryness and possible flaking of skin.
  • helps to soften the skin of the scalp, providing lotion-like properties, without feeling greasy.

Coconut oil and palm oil both contain cetyl alcohol so I decided to use palm oil because I really don’t like coconut oil on my hair [it makes my hair hard Frown]. The recipe I used for this homemade deep conditioner was:

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup palm oil
  • 1 cup yoghurt
  • 2 medium-sized blended SMOOTH avocados (If you don’t make it smooth, your conditioner won’t be smooth). That’s the mistake I made.
  • 2 egg yolks

Why did I choose these natural ingredients?

-honey is a great humectant which attracts moisture to the hair;

-yogurt contains keratin1 and milk proteins. [this is one of the reasons why I think this is a  protein treatment];

-avocados are natural ingredients and extremely vitamin & amino acid-rich. In addition, it is also a thickening agent; and

-egg yolks are also protein-rich. In addition, they are a good source of biotin. Biotin is believed to aid hair growth and its deficiency can lead to alopecia.

I applied the conditioner to my hair and left it for about 30 minutes: it felt really creamy, just like any regular store-bought deep conditioner. When I combed through my hair, I couldn’t believe how easy my comb glided through my hair Laughing ! I would rate it as 8/10 for deep conditioning. The only problem with this homemade deep conditioner is that it is VERY MESSY. By the time I was done, it had dripped down my neck and stained my t-shirt. With regards to messiness, I’d rate it a 7/10 but I’ll do it again because I love the way it made my hair feel. For my shampoo, I stuck with my plan to use all natural ingredients: I washed my hair with African black soap shampoo. What I simply did was to put chunks of African black soap in a pump-dispensing bottle and I added hot water to dissolve the chunks. The shampoo wasn’t drying and I’ll definitely be using it again but more as a clarifying shampoo once a month. 1. Love it. Like the recipe and really do know what you mean about the consistency of the poo. I generally start off with a thickened base and then slowly incorporate the liquid elements. Sorry to hear about your T-Shirt and hey to put the goodness back into your hair and scalp will have lasting effects.
