Air drying with a roller set? I did it!

I’ve always loved straight, bouncy hair that can move with the wind. That’s one reason I love flat ironing my hair. When I decided to grow longer hair, I found out that airdrying was the way to go. Airdrying is good for your hair but it can be boring sometimes and I can never get my hair as straight or as bouncy as with a roller set or flat iron. For the last few weeks, I’ve been working on a better way to air dry. Anyways, guess what? I did: a heatless roller set!!

After conditioning my hair, I got so busy with household stuff that it got dry before I was ready to roll it. When I was finally ready, I sprayed in my leave-in conditioner  and serum on each section (about 1 inch) and then rolled it. It took me about an hour and since it was late at night, I had to sleep in my rollers. OMG! Sleeping in magnetic rollers is not for the faint-hearted: the rollers felt so hard but beauty doesn’t come without pain!!

This was my first major attempt and I was so scared of losing all my hard work at a heatless rollerset so I kept them in till the following night (altogether 24 hours) before taking them out. Next time, I’ll keep checking to see if they’re dry: I’m sure it’ll take less time.  I would advise that if you can’t sleep in them, roll your hair very early on a Saturday morning and take them out just before bed.

I’m pleased with the way it looks. However, I had a lot of breakage when I tried to comb out my roots. I have quite some new growth already and the rollers didn’t hold/stretch the roots as tight as possible so they got a bit hard. I would therefore advise that if you have a lot of new growth, make the rollers as tight as possible. Next time, I might try roller setting in small ponytails and see if my roots are better stretched out. All in all, I’m happy with it!! No more hair salons for me!! What do you guys think? You like? I like it Fomsky, just hope I can be that patient to keep the rollers on for that long, at least…lol! Good job girl.

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Thanks Joanne. I’m glad you like it. 🙂 I’m sure you won’t have to stay that long. Keep your sections small and after 6 hours, keep checking it every hour or two. Take care and big hugs 🙂

  2. Cute, but I agree about the breakage in unstretched new growth. Plus I’ve found that when sleeping on rollers it can create the wrong kind of tension on the hair creating breakage too. I think the ponytails will work well.

Thanks EbonyCPrincess. I agree with you about the tension from the rollers. Next time, I’ll roll it in the morning and take it off before bed. I also think I’ll try the ponytails too. Planning to buy a hooded dryer soon but till then, I’ll be air drying this way & I’ll keep perfecting it till I get it just right! Thanks for passing by 🙂

I am so glad you posted this air dry set. My table top dryer just died or so I think. I am in a roller setting challenge and I was curious about an airdried set. I am only 2 weeks posts so I don’t think that I will have any issues with NG. I will put my rollers in early Sat. morning. So glad to see a successful air dry set.

I’m glad I could be of help. Although, I’m not in the roller setting challenge, I find that my hair does better when it dries straight so I’ve decided to roller set most of the time. Anyways, I follow your blog by email and will watching out to see results from an air dry set (if/when you do!). Take care and happy growing. 🙂

I love your website and I’m glad you ship to other states outside Lagos and you use other means of courier, not those exorbitantly-priced courier companies.

Your roller set is superb. I can never get mine to look like that. I am trying to take care of my hair by myself and reduce my dependence on salons with their sometimes destructive practices. keep up the good work.

Hi Ifeyinwa, thanks for your compliments. I don’t use those over-priced courier companies: just our regular local couriers or any reputable transport service e.g chisco, cross country, etc depending on where you live. My dear, it was an uphill task learning to do a roller set. This is my second attempt and I didn’t even bother putting up pictures of the first one because it wasn’t good at all!! LOL! 😛 Anyways, keep trying and very soon, you’ll be a pro at doing your hair. Don’t be afraid to experiment till you get it right. It’s better to do that while you’re at the beginning of your hair journey. Take care 🙂

24 hours??!! Yowza! I can’t imagine the agony. Sorry, maybe it’s because I have been rollersetting my entire life and I have never been in rollers for more than a few hours, even with NO heat what so ever. Generally I rollerset my hair whilst it is still sopping wet, in the morning of wash day. After setting I clean the apartment, do the dishes, watch a sitcom episode or two, do my make up, fold the laundry, and whatever other chores need doing, maybe play a little PlayStation. By the time I’m done I check my hair and it’s dry. If not bone dry I then usually go sit on my tiny balcony and read a few chapters from whatever book I’m currently reading. After about half an hour my hair would be completely dry after which I take out rollers, silk wrap for 5-10 minutes and then go about the rest of my day. 1.If I can give some advice – roll smaller sections of hair into each roller. 2. Get Mesh rollers, drying time is faster than magnetic rollers. 3. Roll wet hair instead of already air dried hair, it’ll be more manageable with less breakage even with tons of NG.

    • Dr_fomsky says:

LOL. I know I stayed too long. I will definitely take your advice about rolling smaller sections and on wet hair. How do I get these mesh rollers? Which ones? Take care and thanks for dropping a comment 🙂

i also recently tried the roller set method with a twist tho, i hold the end of my hair next to the scalp tight with a scrunchie then roll set the body of my hair.
this method gives you really flat new growth.
