11 tips to turn your body into a fat-burning machine!

This is my 3rd and last weight loss journey! I’ve had to lose weight after each pregnancy. I wish I didn’t add any weight during pregnancy but I do. There are certain ‘tricks’ I’ve learnt from each journey and they’ve always worked for me.
So, what are the tips for turning your body into a lean fat-burning machine?
- Track and monitor your calories: I already talked about this in a previous post, Food journal: an important part of any weight loss program.
- Build some muscle mass. Don’t be scared of the weights ladies. Lift a little to build some muscle. The more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism.
- Do HIIT when you exercise. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a form of exercise that involves doing warm up followed by exercising at your maximum intensity and then moderate exercise. Repeat the high intensity exercise and follow it up with moderate exercise for another 6 cycles. The entire session should last 15-20 minutes only. You will continue to burn fat for another 24 hrs after the exercise.
- Do long aerobic workouts, lasting more than 30 minutes. After 30 minutes of continuous exercise, that’s when you really start to burn the fat. Decide to go another 15 minutes.
- Confuse your body. This is so important: the human body is expert at adapting. If you take 1400 calories consistently, your body gets used to this after a while. So, guess what You stop losing weight even at such a low calorie intake. To confuse the body with regards to calories, I stumbled on calorie cycling, also called a zig-zag calorie diet. What this means is alternating your calorie intake: eat a little on some days and normally on others. When working out, switch around your exercise routine at least monthly (or even weekly) so your body doesn’t get used to it. Do HIIT routine on one day and a long aerobic workout on another day. Dance some days. o yoga on other days. JUST SWITCH IT UP!
- Take green tea before you work out. Green tea is believed to raise metabolism. Taking it just before you work out can help you burn more calories than you would otherwise. If you can’t stand caffeine like me, stick to ‘decaf’.
- Add chilli pepper to your food. The active component of chili pepper, capsaicin, is believed to raise metabolism. It’s therefore a good idea to opt for spicy foods.
- Don’t skip breakfast. When you’re trying to lose weight, there’s always a temptation to do this. Don’t! Skipping the most important meal of the day can lower your metabolism.
- Eat 5-6 small meals a day. When you do this, your body is continuously being supplied with nutrients and is constantly metabolizing the food. In addition, your blood sugar remains stable and your body doesn’t go into fat-storing mode. On the other hand, if you don’t eat frequently, your body is more likely to hold onto fat. OR if you eat one big meal a day, your body also goes into fat-storing mode.
- Use these oils while cooking. Some oils can raise metabolism slightly e.g coconut oil, olive oil, etc. One tablespoon of oil contains 120 calories so use in moderation.
- Eat fish containing omega-3 fatty acid. Eat foods like salmon and tuna for a boost in metabolism.
I’m still on this journey but I promise to give updates monthly or otherwise. Who else is on a weight loss journey? Give me a shout so we can encourage ourselves! Have a nice day y’all!

I’m on a weight loss journey too, these are great tips.
It’s good to know that.. how many pounds have you lost? 🙂
Dr, please can you give an example of HIIT workouts you do, so i can start with it. Thanks
HIIT workouts can be done with any cardio workout. For instance, if you decide to jog: you can rust as fast as possible for 30 seconds and then jog at a moderate level for about 90 to 120 secs after which you run fast for another 30 seconds. Then you jog moderately for 90 to 120 seconds. Repeat this cycle about 6 times.
You can do this on a treadmill. You can also use an elliptical machine or exercise bike. Just pedal very fast for 30 secs and then a bit more slowly for about 90 secs to 120 secs. Repeat this fast to slow cycle about 6 times.
I hope this helps. Have you heard of the TURBOFIRE workout? You can try it if you find it anywhere. It’s a HIIT Workout
