Hair update and healthy hair boot camp reminder

Hi everyone. I just did a relaxer touch-up two days ago, after a 12-week stretch (my first time without doing braids or weave-on). I think I’m going to stick to 12 ± 1 weeks cos’  it works for me. Getting ready for the day, I did a protein treatment with Aphogee 2-step protein treatment (also my first time) 5 days before. I followed up by a deep conditioner with my Kenra moisturizing conditioner. On the D-day, I based my scalp with my oil mix and applied Avlon Fiberguard Preservo strengthening serum to my entire hair. Then I was off to the salon (I still haven’t learnt how to self-relax).

My relaxer was Fiberguard conditioning creme relaxer(mild strength).I use Fiberguard relaxer because it helps to preserve the hair’s strength. I have fine fibers so I don’t want my hair bone straight and that’s why I choose to use this relaxer. It’s also good for color-treated hair.

After rinsing off the relaxer, the stylist applied Sustenance fortifying treatment that I had already mixed with hydrolyzed keratin that I bought off personal formulator website. After neutralizing the shampoo, I deep conditioned with heat (my Kenra MC off course) and I must say that I’m really pleased with the results: my hair doesn’t feel over-processed. It feels really strong and for the first time ever (many firsts today), my hair is not so flat immediately after a relaxer! I also got a major trim: maybe about 2 inches. I wanted my ends to be thick and nice. Besides, my hair grew about 3 inches! Yes 3 inches in 3 months! I must attribute it to the greenhouse effect I discovered late last year.  (I will update my current regimen soon!). One of the major components of the greenhouse effect is applying natural oils on your hair overnight.

Before I run off, I also want to remind you that I’m holding Healthy Hair Bootcamp 2012 on this site from April 1st to June 30th and the 2 persons with the most improved hair will each get a copy of the The Science of Black Hair: A Comprehensive Guide to Textured Hair Care.

Gotta run but expect a video of my relaxer results, a length check and some pictures in the next few days. I would have done all these the day I did my relaxer but I’ve been looking for my camcorder and only found it today. Take care.

** If you live in Lagos, Eden salon on the Lekki-Epe expressway use exclusively Avlon products (of which Fiberguard is one). Yinka bodyline on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi also carries Avlon products. ‘Hair’ salon  in Ikota too. If you can’t get your hands on Fiberguard, Organic Root Stimulator relaxer is really good and doesn’t usually over process hair.

Me too..I’m just a bit unsure of how I can get my hair as straight as possible without a flat iron (btw, I’m on a personal ‘no direct heat’ challenge till december)

Ermm, i was just wondering how you combine the GHE with your regimen, since it requires that you use all natural products and don t apply any oil on your scalp. I m a bit confused about it.

Hi Jennifer, I try to do a ‘modified’ Greenhouse effect as I don’t use all natural products and I apply my special oil treatment (castor oil, amla oil, jojoba oil, etc) to my scalp only on my wash days. I then apply natural oils (a blend of shea oil, coconut oil, safflower oil, olive oil, avocado oil and castor oil) to my entire hair , wear my shower cap and then a hair bonnet and sleep over night with it. The following day, I wash my hair or just do a co-wash, depending.
