How I air dry my hair without frizz: step by step

     Air drying your hair is the safest and most healthy way to dry your hair. It is however the most boring way and takes the longest time to dry. To make it more exciting, you can rollerset it, do a braid out or a twist it. If you’re just doing a normal air dry, it’s so important to get a good smooth finish so your hair doesn’t make you look untidy.  To get a smooth air dry, your cuticles should be closed and smooth. Keep this in mind through out your wash process.

To get a good air dry, the following factors are so important

  1. Your products
  2. Your tools
  3. Your technique

Your products

When you intend to dry your hair, every product you use on your wash day should have the effect of moisturing your hair and making it SOFT

Products you should have ready are as follows:

  • A moisturizing shampoo, preferably a sulfate free shampoo;
  • A good conditioner (I think you’ll get a better finish if you use a deep conditioner.);
  • Apple cider vinegar, Roux porosity Control Corrector & Conditioner or just cold water if you don’t have any of these.
  • An effective leave-in detangler and/or a leave-in conditioner with good slip;
  • A hair oil or butter; and
  • A serum (optional but will help achieve the best finish)
  • A soft boar bristle brush or a baby brush
  • A scarf

Your tools

You will need:

  • A T-shirt to remove the excess water from your hair after washing.
  • An extra wide-tooth comb
  • A wide tooth comb
  • A medium-tooth comb
  • A fine-tooth comb (if you really want it extra smooth)

    wat can i say?? I m so thrilled with this post. I v been wondering why my hair doesn t have that smooth, silky look to it after airdrying. Thanks for the tips. However, i v been wondering, how do you remove shed hairs and with which type of comb? I don t knw if i m sheddng excessively or wat but i just keep seeing shed hairs (and some broken ones) evn after i think i v gotten them all out!!do you also remove them just before washing??

    • Dr_fomsky says:

      I use a regular shower comb. I don’t try to get out the shed hair: I think they’ll come out on their own. If you’re having a lot of shed hairs, then it means that many of your hair follicles are in telogen phase and are just falling out as part of nature. You can however delay shedding by doing a black tea rinse. Read my post on shedding
      As for the breakage, is it during the detangling before the air dry? Maybe you should only use one wide tooth comb and don’t go lower to a medium tooth comb.
      Is it during the week? Do you comb your hair every day? Many hair bloggers I know like Sunshyne (Hairliciousinc) and Jeni (Just grow already) only comb their hair on wash days. Maybe you should finger comb. I might have to do a video on how to get a good finger combing.
      When did you clarify your hair last?
      What type of protein conditioner do you use? How often do you use it?
      There are so many reasons for breakage I don’t even know where to start from. Please respond by email or call me so we can talk better. Hugs. 🙂

        I know this is a bit late, but thanks for this post :). I’ve always wondered how to air dry my hair without as much frizz, now i realise i’ve been doing a lot of things wrong. I have a question though, looks like you use ur whipped shea butter as a sealant. I use mine as a moisturizer and i’m wondering if i’ve been doing it all wrong. I moisturize with my whipped shea butter and seal with either coconut or castor oil.

          Hi Ada…Whipped shea butter doesn’t really have moisture so I think it might be better as a sealant. Coconut and castor oil are also great sealants.

  4. […] On Tuesday morning, I detangled  in sections with my new Hercules Sageman Magic Star Jumbo Rake comb (finally gave in… Ebony thanks to you). I didn’t detangle my hair when it was dripping wet because I wanted to compare which is better: detangling dripping wet hair vs detangling semi-wet hair. My opinion is this: your hair is most vulnerable to breakage when it is dripping wet. Detangling your hair when it’s about 50-80% dry might be a bit safer. On the other hand, I also think that detangling hair that is 100% dry is not the best! If you ask me, it’s better wet than dry! The only catch with detangling semi-wet hair is that it doesn’t come out as smooth as when you detangle it wet. LEARN HOW I AIRDRY BY CLICKING HERE. […]

    Thank you so much for the video, it is really an eye opener. I airdry and wonder why I still have that ‘bulkyness’, with the twisting of the ends in two directions, I see how it makes sense. I am currently reading other old posts for those little tips I may still be missing. Once again, excellent job. Keep blogging!!!
