Hi guys. One of the major causes of hair breakage is lack of moisture. There are several ways you can restore the moisture levels in your hair. They include:

  1. Deep Conditioning. You can read my post, BACK TO THE BASICS: DEEP CONDITIONING
  2. Baggying. To read my post about baggying, read HERE.
  3. Moisturizing and sealing.

Today, I’m just going to talk briefly about moisturizing and sealing. Most people I know that are on a healthy hair journey ensure that they moisturize and seal as often as possible.

What is moisturizing?

This is applying any water-based moisturizer of your choice on your hair in between wash days. A water-based moisturizer usually has water as its first ingredient. [In addition,I usually don’t like moisturizers that have oils in them but that’s just me].

Some examples of moisturizers include S-curl activator, Elasta QP mango-butter moisturizer, Bee Mine Deja’s Hair Milk, etc.

You can also use any moisturizing leave-in conditioner as a moisturizer. I also love to use Herbal Essences Long Term Relationship Leave-in Conditioner or Touchably Smooth Leave-in Conditioner.

What is sealing?

This is following the application of your moisturizer with any agent that will lock in the moisture. Most people use oils or butters e.g Olive oil, Castor oil, Shea butter, etc. Some people do use serums but I think if you’re going to do that, it should be a serum that contains water-soluble silicones. [I definitely have to do a post about serums, silicones, etc]

How often should I do this?

Some people moisturize and seal twice a day, some once a day and others every other day. I guess it’s up to your hair needs, the climatic condition where you live and the current season. If you live in a humid environment like I do, you may need to moisturize and seal only once a day or every other day. On the other hand, if you live in a dry environment, twice a day may be necessary.

Seasons are also important. For example, during winter (in temperate climates) or dry season (in tropical climates), you might need to moisturize and seal your hair twice a day. In Nigeria, during the dry season, there is a period between November and March when we experience some dry, dusty winds called Harmattan. During Harmattan, you may need to moisturize your hair twice a day.

How do you moisturize and seal your hair?

It’s really quite simple. Apply a small amount of your favorite moisturizer into your hair. Follow up with an oil. That’s all. I usually apply my products between my fingers and ‘comb’ them into my hair like I’m finger combing. I do this because I don’t want my hair getting too wet. Some other people apply more than that. It’s up to you. I also sometimes do a more intensive moisturizing and sealing session, depending on how I feel or if I’m stretching.

There are several videos online that describe moisturizing and sealing. You can watch Sunshyne (from Hairlicousinc.com) and How she moisturizes and seals her hair.

I also have 2 videos: watch them here.

Take care!
