Length retention: Keeping your ends moist 24/7

    There is one thing common to most black ladies who have successfully grown longer healthy hair: they moisturize their hair frequently. I usually moisturize my hair nightly or every other night (if I’m too tired). Some days ago, I stumbled on something called Chicoro’s method of moisturizing and sealing. I decided to try it and I must tell you that I’m blown away. She’s a natural-haired girl and most of the people I saw talking about it were also natural-haired. Hair is hair so I decided to try it and I must tell you the truth: my hair feels so soft and moisturized each night that I almost don’t want to moisturize. Before now, my hair would be dry by evening and I would have to moisturize but now I just moisturize out of habit.

This method involves:

  1. moisturizing with a water-based moisturizer e.g S-curl activator moisturizer, Wave nouveau moisturizing finishing lotion, Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split end protector, etc. For more suggestions of moisturizers, click HERE.
  2. sealing with an oil;
  3. sealing again with an emulsified based moisturizer, cream or very thick grease e.g vaseline (yes it works for some but I’ll be avoiding this), Hairveda Whipped Creme Ends Hydration, Organic Root Stimulator Carrot Oil, Organic Root stimulator olive oil, Hollywood Beauty Olive Cream Hairdress,Darcy’s Botanicals Coconut Lemongrass Transitioning CremeBee Hold Curly Butter,Luscious Balanced Cream Moisturizer, Elasta Qp Olive and Mango Butter.

Products I use to moisturize and seal are: My diluted Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split end protector, followed by my oil mix (amla-infused castor oil, avocado oil, safflower oil, olive oil) and then lastly Elasta QP Olive oil and mango butter. I always ensure that my ends are well-coated because they are the oldest part of the hair and the most fragile. After this, I tie my silk scarf to ensure that my hair is smooth in the morning, then I fold my hair up and then wear my satin bonnet. I always sleep with a satin pillowcase just in case my bonnet falls off. It hardly ever does anyway! When I wake up in the morning, my hair feels soft & moisturized but not weighed down!

Take care!

    Great timing on this.. I recently came across Chicoro’s method but couldn’t figure out what products to use for the 1st and 3rd steps – so thank you for posting this.. I’m off to moisturize and greenhouse (another tip I got from you). Thank you 🙂

      You’re welcome Maia. When I found out this method, I googled for any relaxed hair wearers doing this and I couldn’t find anyone talking about this so I decided to write this post. So I’m glad I could be of help!
      I love ‘greenhousing’: it really works. I’ve noticed a lot of growth since I started doing this. Take care. 🙂
