Review: Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor oil Shampoo

Full name: Tropic Isle Living Jamaican All Natural Black Castor oil Shampoo with Shea butter

Ingredients: Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Essential oils of Pimento, Lavender and Lemon, Aloe Vera and Rosemary Extracts, Organic Saponified Oils of Coconut, Olive and Jojoba oils, Vegetable Gum/Glycerin Extract.

Promises: Gently Cleans & Conditions Hair, Restores Moisture & Promotes Healthy Scalp. Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor OiL Shampoo does not contain sulfates, alcohol and other potentially harmful chemicals used in commercial shampoos. It is 100% natural.

My thoughts: I’ve had the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Organic Shampoo with Shea Butter in my stash for a while now and I’ve been meaning to use it but I just kept putting it off: I had read some Amazon reviews and a few people didn’t like it. Some complaints were about the smell. Some others felt that it made their hair feel coarse and strawlike.

Anyways, I used it for my mid-week wash and I liked it. Firstly, I noticed that it lathered well unlike many sulfate-free shampoos. Although it comes in a REALLY small bottle (8oz), I only needed a little so I think it can last for a relatively long time. I washed my hair in 4 sections because I was scared it might tangle or dry out my hair but it didn’t. My hair felt soft and clean, not dried out at all. Although it contains several oils l, it didn’t make my hair feel oily or weighed down either: it almost felt like I was using a conditioning shampoo. In addition, the smell is not as strong as the original Jamaican black castor oil.

One thing I should say is that athough it’s called Jamaican Black Castor oil with Shea butter, I didn’t see shea butter among the ingredients listed on the bottle!

Conclusion: I will definitely include it in my weekly washes from now on. Probably in my mid-week wash.

My old rating. SEE COMMENT BELOW

Updated: 22nd March 2013

I used this shampoo a few days without pre-pooing first and my hair felt like it was coated. This was my first time using it without doing a prepoo. I am therefore reducing its rating to 3.5.

3.5 stars

I purchased the Jamaican shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo lathers well but it does make my hair feel extremely weighed down after washing. I assumed the conditioner would detangle and give it its normal feel. It didn’t. I needed to use another conditioner in order to comb through my hair to avoid it coming out in the comb. My hair is relaxed so I typically don’t have this issue. Any suggestions?

Did you use the castor oil conditioner? I used this once and I had a similar issue. The only thing that helped was to clarify my hair and deep condition with my regular deep conditioner. I’ve used this shampoo several times and I don’t recall it weighing my hair down. I noticed that it doesn’t leave the hair smooth until I deep condition properly. I think it’s because it has no silicones. I don’t know.
Although the conditioner has oils which are good for hair, I don’t consider it a conditioner. I now use it as a prepoo TREATMENT only because I like the oils it contains. I honestly think it is their worst product.
