My little experiment with Coconut milk and lemon juice

I was browsing the net for natural relaxers and I stumbled on Coconut milk and lemon juice ‘relaxer’. I am currently 8 weeks post-relaxer and my hairline is getting out of hand. I decided that it wouldn’t hurt to try the coconut milk conditioner.

My recipe was:

  • 1 400 ml (About 13.53 Fl Oz) tin of coconut milk
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 3 tablespoons of cornstarch

I mixed the ingredients in a saucepan and heated the mixture until it thickened. I cooled it in the freezer for about 20 minutes. I then applied it to my new growth AND relaxed hair.

In the online recipes, the instructions are that you should wash your hair AFTER rinsing out the conditioner. I thought to myself that would be defeating the purpose of the conditioner so I just co-washed my hair. Bad idea!!

After squeezing out the excess water from my hair, I applied my leave-in conditioner, Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split End Protector, brushed the top of my hair with a boar bristle brush, tied a scarf around the hair line and air dried. After my hair dried, it kept breaking at the least touch. Besides, my hair strands were sticking together. However, my hairline did look smoother than it has been in the last few weeks but the breakage wasn’t worth it. The smoothness might have just been because of the brush and the scarf. Next time (that is if I’m brave enough), I’ll apply the conditioner only to my new growth and I will definitely wash it out! LOL!

Aww. Sorry about the breaking hair, is it still breaking now or did you wash it out? Speaking of bad wash days, I had mine yesterday.

Hmmmm. With my trailer load of buildup mostly castor oil and evoo, I washed my hair in 8 plaits (for ease of detangling 15 weeks new growth) with black soap. DCed with my regulars but without oil. By the time I started detangling, ehhh, stickiness is an understatement. I still had my buildup with me! I guess very little got washed away. Chai, I just wasn’t ready to handle more hair, so I cornrowed and just left it there. SLS shampoo coming up next wash day…without plaits!!! Thank God, that will be my last washday before relaxer touch up day.
