Wash day: clarified and then roller set my hair!

Merry Christmas to everyone!! HO!HO!HO!

I have some good news: I bought a standing hair dryer AND a steamer!!

In my last post, My little experiment with coconut milk and lime, I told you guys how my hair was feeling so sticky and just Areaking with every touch. I decided that I needed to wash my hair. I washed my hair with Organic Root Stimulator Creamy Aloe Shampoo and then I deep conditioned my hair with two conditioners: Organic Root Stimulator Replenishing Conditioner on the left and Silk Elements Kera Minerals Deep Conditioner on the right.

I sat underneath my hair dryer for 20 minutes and allowed my hair cool down before rinsing my hair with cool water. After rinsing my hair, I applied Roux Porosity Control Conditioner to my hair  and left it on for one minute before rinsing it out. My hair didn’t really feel so soft.

To roller set my hair, I used Aphogee Green Tea Restructurizer as my only leave-in. It took me about 70 minutes to roll my hair. I had a LOT of breakage. When I took out the rollers, my hair felt so sticky and dry. Still more breakage.

The way my hair felt really bothered me so the next day, I decided that either my hair was suffering from product buildup or protein overload. I went back to read my own post, What is product buildup and how can it affect your hair? After reading it, I literally ran out to get myself some baking soda. I added 1 1/2 tablespoons of baking soda and 1 1/2 tablespoons of Pureology Purify shampoo to one 50cl bottle of water which was about three-quarter full. I was afraid my hair would get hard and tangle from the shampoo and baking soda mix. I decided to section my hair into six to reduce the risk of that happening.

  • I shampooed each section twice.
  • After rinsing each section, I applied Salon Selectives S Smooth & Straight conditioner. Although my hair felt a little stripped, as soon as I applied the conditioner, my hair literally melted! I’m almost tempted to use this baking soda and shampoo mix every week. I DO NOT ADVOCATE THE USE OF BAKING SODA BECAUSE IT CAN BE DAMAGING TO HAIR.
  • I also used the Salon Selectives Smooth & Straight Conditioner as my deep conditioner. I combed through each section, wore a shower cap and sat under the dryer for about 20 minutes.
  • I did some exercise afterward and then I rinsed out my hair, detangling again under the shower. My hair felt so smooth and soft. It hasn’t felt this soft in a really long time. I think since my relaxer touch-up about 2 months ago.
  • For my leave-ins, I applied Herbal Essences Touchably Smooth Split End Protector, Grapeseed Oil, GVP Silk Remedy (in that order) to each section. I proceeded to roll my hair. It was a bit easier because my hair was still in the six sections I had washed and conditioned in: Forward middle, Behind middle, Forward Left side, Behind Left side, Forward right side, Behind right side.
  • This time, it took me 55 minutes to roll my hair and the breakage was much much less. I used three sizes of combs: firstly, a wide-tooth comb, then a medium-tooth comb and lastly a rattail comb. I sat under the dryer for about 20 minutes I think. I had to go somewhere so I took out the rollers but didn’t comb through because I wasn’t sure whether my hair was dry enough. I just held up my hair with a clip.
  • Before I went to wed, I wrapped my hair. I don’t think I noticed any breakage. My hair did feel a little bit sticky but nothing like the previous day. My camera has been bad for a few weeks now and I’ve resorted to using my phone to take pictures. The battery was too low to take any pictures.
  • In the morning, I unwrapped my hair and styled it in preparation for this year’s main Christmas post: Jingle Bell Rock – Holiday Hair Special (Featuring fabulous bloggers). This is a preview of the style:
