Wash day: Wigging it this week!!

My hair is now about 7 weeks post-relaxer and my hairline is simply atrocious: I have tiny hairs growing all over and I’m tired of smoothening them! A friend of mine saw my hair and was asking me when I was going to get a relaxer touch-up. I think since my hair is texlaxed, it doesn’t look as straight as it could be. In addition, this Greenhouse effect challenge might actually be making my hair drier than usual.

I haven’t fixed any weave this year and I don’t think I will with the remaining days left in this year. Since I  wanted a different look, I decided to buy a wig!

  1. On Friday night, I mixed V05 Balancing conditioner with Tropic Isle Living Coconut castor oil and applied this to my hair. I covered my hair with a shower cap and then wore my heating cap for about 20 minutes. After taking off the heating cap, I wore a hair bonnet on top of the shower cap and then a beret on that. Went to bed
  2. When I rinsed my hair in the morning, I was surprised at how soft it felt.
  3. I did a quick wash with Elasta QP shampoo for Relaxed Hair that I had diluted in a bowl of water.
  4. I applied Joico Moisture Recovery Conditioner to  my hair and left it on for 3 minutes.
  5. Rinsed my hair with cool water.
  6. My leave-in conditioner was Herbal Essences Split End Protector
  7. Detangled my hair in about 8-10 sections with my Plugged in Shower Comb.
  8. Tied my hair with a scarf and let it dry for about an hour
  9. Lightly combed through my hair again.
  10. Had a stylist do some cornrows for me. I tried to show her that she should comb my hair from the ends and work her way upwards but she kept combing it from midway down. This is the point where my ‘texlaxed’ hair meets the straighter relaxed ends and I must say that I was not happy with the amount of broken hairs. I have decided that I am going to learn how to do cornrows myself from henceforth! I have also decided that I am going to do all my roller sets and relaxer touch-ups myself from now on!`
  11. Before I put on the wig, I wear my satin bonnet.
  12. When I put on the wig, I tuck the edges of the bonnet into the wig.
  13. For the Greenhouse effect challenge: At night, I apply a little oil to the woven hair tracks. I put on a shower cap and then a bonnet and go to bed.

I’m copying you this weekend once I get my hands on a decent wig and scout for a satin bonnet. I second the motion of learning to weave, relax and rollerset by yourself. Its scary already thinking of the stylist that will actually listen when it time for my next touchup.

  2. Joie says:

Mine was more like a concotion, lol. I mixed my natural neriah deep conditioner, herbal essences break over’s strengthening conditioner, honey, coconut oil, castor oil n olive oil together. Applied it on my dry hair n covered it shower car, tied a scarf, wore a beret n my satin bonnet. Then went to bed. The following day was sunday, I went to church with it n rinsed it out when I got back home. I love d result, my hair felt so soft.

  3. Am also determined to do my own cornrows in the coming year.

    • Dr_fomsky says:

I totally agree with you. I might falter on the retouching but as for the corn rows and roller sets… I will definitely do it myself from now on!! I need a hair dryer for Christmas!! Who wants to buy me one?

  4. lolade says:

Yo! Wigging is my stuff. It is my most frequent protective style. Welcome on board! I just cross wrap my hair, never tried cornrows under my wig. Any special reason for the cornrows?

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Didn’t know you girls were wearing wigs.. why didn’t you tell me? It’s just the bomb! I take off my hair in the evening and I feel so free.. and not encumbered with the heaviness I would have experienced with a weave.
I did the cornrow so I didn’t have to manipulate my hair for the next 1-2 weeks. I love playing with my hair. To tell you how bad it is, I did a 1 inch trim last week and I totally regret it now: One whole month of hair growth gone because I can’t stop looking for better and better hair!

      • Dabs says:

Lol!! We must be ‘hair sisters from a different mother’ I cannot stop touching my hair, that’s why I love protective styling if not my hands will be in my hair all the time and I also trim way too often just because I want perfectly full hair! I wigged very often in the US but Naija heat made me dump my wigs 🙁

        • Dr_fomsky says:

LOL…We must really be ‘hair sisters’!
My dear, I’ve decided to do more protective styling next year and leave my hair alone. I hope to reach MBL next year by God’s grace if I refrain from trimming the way I did this year!!

  5. Eya says:

I wish I could just put my head on a table and do everything myself. I hate leaving a salon unhappy. Why pay to get myself angry? These days I think there is more incompetence than hard work in many hair dressing salons. Sorry about the broken hair!

  6. Ifai says:

I hardly go to the salon except for relaxer touch-ups. I dread going in for anything else. Their combing scares me silly. I do everything else myself. Wigging is one of my favourite protective styles and I cornrow my hair myself. Of course it is far from perfect but then it will be properly covered up so I don’t mind if it isn’t presentable.

I use a wig cap on my hair before I put on the wig. Is that okay?

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Ifai, didn’t know you gals were wearing wigs! Why did you guys not tell me how much fun it was? LOL
The last time I roller set my hair in the salon, I decided that would be my last time!!
A wig cap is okay I think so long as it doesn’t dry out your hair. I use a satin bonnet because I don’t have a wig cap and it keeps my hair moisturized all day!

  7. Dabs says:

Knowing how to weave, relax my hair myself and now rollerset myself has saved me soooo much hair heart ache. It’s sooo worth it 🙂

    • Dr_fomsky says:

I’m jealous oh! I must learn how to do all these myself… it’s so worth it!

      • Ifai says:

Prior to starting my hair journey I had never washed my hair myself. I didn’t even know how my hair felt but now, my roller sets, flexirod sets, braiding/weaving, styling, bantu knots have all improved soooo much I don’t even bother to go to the salon and my hair is always looking good. It’s just practise, practise, practise.

        • Dr_fomsky says:

I’ve spent this year just getting to understand my hair but I didn’t practise styling and other things much. Next year, I hope to do more fun things with my hair!!

  8. Rebekah says:

I like the wig, just started that myself snice I’m trying to grow my hair.

  9. Joie says:

I think one of my goals next year for my hair journey is to learn to do my cornrows, twists, bantu knots etc myself

  10. Lesley says:

    Loving how the wig looks!
I nominated you for a Liebster Award!

  11. Wonder says:

So I got me a cool wig, did my cornrows myself for the very first time. Chai. I can’t wait to be my own stylist from start to finish. I didn’t know the wig thing was reigning like this. I’m getting me WIGS from henceforth, all sorta styles. My next touchup will be done by me! Eh, if it likes, let it be underprocessed (which I hope not lol) or texlaxed. As long as I retain the precious strands I’ve hustled to grow!

    • Dr_fomsky says:

Don’t mind all these girls oh! I didn’t know that other people were using wigs for protective styling. My dear, I love it. Every time I take off my hair in the evening, I burst out laughing!!
I feel you about the retouching. I’ll do the half n’ half method. I think I should video it just for laughs!! 😛 😛 🙂

  12. […] I’ve been so busy with so many things! In my last post, you might recall that I told you guys I was wigging it out for last week. Throughout last week, I felt a sense of freedom and joy whenever I got home and […]

TeeehEeheee…so I’m off sick n decided to do sum hair site stalking lol. Gr8 laughs esp at putting ur head on a table to style it urself and y didn’t u guys tel me! HahahahAaa. Wen I started my hair journey in dec last year I bought a synthetic lacefront wig looks good but was rather expensive o, imagine evn for a synthetic thing! But it was hot n I was shy so it took me a while to wear it. Iv always bin an I can’t wear a wig snob…til I realised… Ah these weaves iv bin wearin r so fake too n atleast wit a wig I can go about my hair regimen business…n leme jus say sometimes I’m jus lazy so wen I wear a wig its like I’m on vacation. I evn jus greenhouse my hair on sum nights. Eh…iv mentioned it in another post…due to my lacefront expensiveness (is dat evn a word lol) and my nappy looking hair,I was lookin for plan b. Luckily for me b4 I gv up n wen to go buy another lacefront I discovered accidentally the diy wig corner on you tube! My eyes popped n iv neva bin d same…and d fact dat u basically chose ur own hair and make it in d style u want is jus super n better than crawling thru malls looking for ur perfect wig. Evry1 who thort I was crazy wen I started my hair journey and evn crazier wen I announced I’m making my own wig is now salivating…hahaha and saying can u make me 1, pleasssssseeeee? D grovellin neva gets old…I’ll think about making ones for them wen I get tired of d grovelling. Hahahah ok lemme stop lying, it was abit tym consumin for me coz I had a lot goin on so I’ll b a fairywig mother soon. Lol but ladies go on ova to youtube n check em out ul b astounded. Ps. I evn confused a few ladies at d bank they kept axin wher I was from coz my half wig hair matched my own seriously stretched hair of 13 or 14weeks so they cldnt tel d difrnce, diy wigs r half and mayb evn less the price, fine wit abit more effort but atleast u can tailor them to ur current wants n needs which in my opinion is brilliant 😉 exciting ryt ya’l?.

Veronica! Another epistle! Mercy on you! LOL! Sorry about being sick. My dear, don’t mind all these gals… it was when I talked about my wigging it that they all confessed that they had been doing the same thing… it was so fun wearing that wig…looking forward to more wigging when my hair gets more ‘due’. So, how do you make the wig? You buy the weave-on pieces and sew them? I need to go watch one of these videos..
So your friends are salivating for your wigs? They must really be nice and can you believe that they save you money too… will you make me one please? Just kidding…I know how time consuming it must have been. Wow… I’m so inspired by your enthusiasm! Happy hair growing girlfriend!! Hi-five!
