Relaxer day routine – May 10th 2013

Sorry this post is coming more than 2 weeks since I relaxed my hair. My relaxer day routine is pretty simple. My current relaxer is Beautiful Beginnings Relaxer for fine hair.

A few days before I relaxed my hair, I had used a protein conditioner to deep condition my hair. The night before, I applied Jamaican Black Castor Oil Serum to my scalp. On the actual relaxer day, I applied some serum (GVP silk remedy) to my hair (previously relaxed and new growth). Next, I based my scalp with petroleum jelly before sectioning my hair into 4.

I decided to go to a salon to have it relaxed: I was however feeling too lazy to do it myself and considering my last drama with relaxing my hair in December. The first sign that it wasn’t going to be a good day was when he tried to detangle my hair from the roots first. I was about 14 weeks post-relaxer so imagine how much new growth I had. I corrected him and he did try to do better. He used my sprush to apply the relaxer and really fell in love with it! After applying the relaxer to my hair, it still hadn’t taken the relaxer so he decided to comb through the new growth with a tail comb. Terrible practice!

We proceeded to rinse off the relaxer immediately after. To be honest, I wasn’t even looking at the time! This was another terrible mistake! After rinsing off the relaxer, he applied Aphogee 2 minute reconstructor to my hair and we left it in for about 4 minutes before rinsing off. It was only then that we washed off the relaxer with the neutralizing shampoo. Since the relaxer is a no-lye relaxer, I was worried about calcium deposits being left in my hair so I asked him to do the final wash with Organic Root Stimulator Aloe shampoo.

Afterward, he applied Silk Dreams Avocado pudding and I had to run to go pick my kids from school. When I got home, I rinsed it off and air dried. When I was detangling my hair, I did lose quite some hair and I think it was because he combed through the new growth from the roots. The following morning, when I took a picture of my hair, I was surprised to see how over-processed my hair looked! I’ve been using this relaxer twice and it has never left my hair this over processed. I also think that I lost some hair in the middle!

my hair was overprocessed

My hair strands are already fine as they are and although I don’t want my hair too ‘texlaxed’, I don’t want it over-processed either. I have decided that it’s better to make a mistake relaxing my hair than to let someone else do it. I know my hair better than anyone does. It’s time to practice what I’ve learnt wit regards to relaxers! So no more letting other people do my relaxer and I mean it this time!! With my hair being over-processed, I decided that I needed to do something and fast! Watch out for my next post tomorrow!

Hi,your post is exactly what i experienced last friday. I was 10 weeks post relaxer and i was looking forward to a well relaxed hair(not over processed or under processed). I had used TCB lye relaxer in march and i didnt like the texlaxed look. I practically endured my hair without being tempted to re- retouch my hair before 10weeks. Anyway, i relaxed my hair last friday with Profectiv no- lye relaxer, followed all the steps you followed and had an over- processed result. I co- washed on sunday to see if i could salvage the situation but its the sae thing. Hmmm. I await your next post to see what can be done to remedy the situation. cheers, Mina

Oh no!! I’m sorry to hear about your not so great salon experience. Not all stylists know what they’re doing. I agree with you, I’d rather do it myself than have someone else mess it up. I hope you didn’t have a setback from this. Good luck

Dear Dr. Fomsky, you are so kind to post your real life experience. So many people post their “gorgeous” or “perfect” picture. Your story is a warning for all of us.

    I have 2 questions:

    1) Have you tried texturizers? Their ph are from 7 to 11.

    2) Is your hair low porosity?

3)What relaxers have you tried besides Affirm Fiberguard mild relaxer and Beautiful beginnings?

Have you tried ORS lye professional (normal strength)?
Many people who texlax or look for gentler option use it.
This leads me to believe that even though it’s lye, it might be gentle.
I’ve also heard almost no complaints about scalp burns.

I wish that I could find the Ph for it. I’m desperate to try something to manage my 3 year natural hair. It’s beginning to take too long of my life.

Thank you so much for your kind compliments. No I haven’t tried texturizers.
My hair is actually not low porosity. It easily gets straight.
I haven’t tried ORS lye relaxer. I have a new relaxer which I tried and it’s winking out just perfectly. It’s called Activilong and I bought it in Paris.
Have you decided if you’ll relax your hair of stay natural?
