Too much carbohydrates in our diet!

This is my favourite dish: white rice, fried plantain and chicken, beef or fish! I don’t usually add any vegetables and when I do, it is just a little side dish.

This is a far cry from the recommended healthy meal portion which looks something like this:

Carbohydrate portions

There are two main types of starchy carbohydrates:

1) Refined carbohydrates e.g white rice, white bread, white pasta, etc

2) Natural/complex carbohydrates e.g Irish potatoes, sweet potatoes, brown rice, oats, wholewheat bread, bananas, beans, yams, etc.

I’m sure you know that natural carbohydrates are the way to go. However, you still have to balance your diet properly.

So, what can eating too much carbohydrates cause?

  1. Make you feel sleepy and sluggish. This always happens to me after a heavy meal. When I was in medical school, I ALWAYS fell asleep during the class after lunch. LOL!
  2. Weight gain
  3. Bigger waist line

On the other hand, not eating enough carbohydrates can cause:

  1. Low blood sugar,
  2. Ketosis (seen as mental fatigue, nausea, headache, etc). That’s why you feel awful when you start any low-carb diet!
  3. Extreme hunger.

Although I don’t always eat large portions of starchy carbohydrates, I also don’t take a lot of fruits and vegetables. I need to balance out my meals and it’s something I keep working on. I do better and then I fail and start again! How much carbohydrates do you take in your diet? Do you take any fruits and vegetables regularly?

I love carbs so I make a conscious effort to take more proteins and fruits at least as I am not a fan of vegetables except for a select few.
