Mill Creek Botanicals: Keratin, Henna and Biotin conditioners {A review}

When I started using only cleansing conditioners to ‘wash’ my hair, I knew it was important that I would need to cut out products that would cause buildup (e.g silicone-containing products) from my regimen. My two fave protein conditioners of all time, Nexxus Humectress Ultimate Moisture Deep Conditioning treatment and Joico moisture recovery conditioner, contain silicones. Although I’ve heard so much good stuff about Aphogee two-minute reconstructor, it contains mineral oil.
I was in a fix. I love protein conditioners and I knew I needed to get a new one. In my online research, I stumbled on the Mill Creek Botanicals Conditioners and I quickly ordered 3 varieties: keratin, henna and biotin.

This post is basically a review of these three Mill Creek Botanicals conditioners.

No artificial colors. pH balanced. Paraben Free. Natural and organic ingredients.

1. Mill Creek Keratin Conditioner Repair Formula

Ingredients:
Deionized water, hydrolyzed keratin, cottonseed oil, panthenol, balsam peru, olive oil, retinyl palmitate , tocopherol, rosemary extract, barley extract, stearalkonium chloride, glyceryl stearate, glycerin, cetyl alcohol, hydrolyzed RNA, hydrolyzed DNA, octyl dimethyl PABA, PEG-100 stearate, sodium caseinate, sodium hydroxide, corn oil, organic aloe vera gel, citric acid, organic essential oil, caramel, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, botanical fragrance.

The first five ingredients of any conditioner are the most important and this conditioner has some good ones: hydrolysed keratin, panthenol and olive oil. However, it does have sodium hydroxide, which  I wasn’t very comfortable about. I did some research and it is said that sodium hydroxide in a hair product is just to balance the pH. It is only when it is in a relaxer that it straightens the hair.

Balsam Peru is added to perfumes, soaps, and cosmetics as a fragrance. It also helps to keep perfume from evaporating too fast.

2. Mill Creek Henna Conditioning Enhancing Formula

Ingredients

Deionized water, henna extract, palm christi oil, panthenol, hydrolyzed keratin, chamomile extract, barley extract, stearalkonium chloride, cetylalcohol, octyl dimethyl PABA, citric acid, caramel, organic aloe vera gel, organic essential oil, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, botanical fragrance.

This also has good stuff in the first five ingredients.

3. Mill Creek Biotin Conditioner Therapy Formula

Ingredients

Deionized water, biotin, panthenol, hydrolyzed keratin, hydrolyzed collagen, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, dicetyldimonium chloride, oleamidopropyl dimethylamine, cetearyl alcohol, ceteareth-20, hydrolyzed glycosaminoglycans, hydrolyzed RNA, hydrolyzed DNA, retinyl palmitate, cysteine HCI, citric acid, corn oil, sodium chloride, quaternium-15, peppermint oil, organic aloe vera gel, organic essential oil, citric acid, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, botanical fragrance.

Lovely first five ingredients: biotin, panthenol, hydrolysed keratin, hydrolysed collagen and cetyl alcohol.

During conditioning, cetyl alcohol is responsible for allowing conditioner to spread easily over the hair. Once rinsed off, some cetyl alcohol is thought to deposit on the surface of hair (i.e cuticle), creating a feeling of softness.

Suggested use:

The directions for these conditioners are basically the same for all three.

Apply conditioner to clean hair paying special attention to ends. Work conditioner through hair with fingertips. Leave on for 1 to 2 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and style as usual. For more intense conditioning leave on hair for 5 to 10 minutes.

I usually mix up the biotin and henna versions (because I love them both). I add this mix to my other 2 moisturising conditioners and oils. Next, I use heat for at least 30 minutes. If I have nothing to do, I sit underneath my standing dryer but if I’m busy, I put on my heating cap. During my last relaxer touch up, I used the keratin version as a protein treatment after rinsing off my relaxer.

My thoughts on these conditioners:

  • Silicone-free
  • No mineral oil.
  • First five ingredients are very good. Some conditioners will be labelled as being biotin conditioner. When you read the ingredient list, the biotin would be at the bottom of the list. I hate that! LOL!
  • They reduce breakage. I love the Biotin version because it contains hydrolysed keratin and collagen. Collagen helps to increase the flexibility of the hair strand so that you experience less breakage during manipulation. Since I started using these conditioners, my breakage is seriously reduced.
  • They make hair look fuller. My hair is more bouncy than it used to be.
  • They reduce hair porosity and if you have high porosity hair, these conditioners might help improve its porosity. My hair retains moisture better than it used to. I won’t attribute the improvement of my hair porosity entirely to these conditioners because I recently started roller setting, in combination with other products.
  • Sodium hydroxide is in the keratin version.
  • Not creamy. Have to be mixed with something else to make them creamy.
  • Not enough slip. That doesn’t matter to me because I can get slip for my other conditioners.

All in all, I love these conditioners. They have fast become a part of my regimen.
