Are braids and weaves really protective?

I am thinking of starting a weekly Google Hangout where we can have an face-to-face interactive discussion online. If you would like to join a discussion, do let me know topics or questions that might interest you and suitable times. Google Hangouts is an instant messaging and video chat platform developed by Google.

Anyways, braids or weaves?

Someone sent me a BBM yesterday complaining about losing a lot of hair while taking out her braids. On further enquiry, I found out that she applied oil to the roots only. I hardly ever braid my hair so I might not be very experienced in that regard. However, I think that the safest way to take down braids or cornrow is to detangle each braid or plait using a detangling conditioner or oil?
One of the questions she asked me was, “Why do we call braids protective when you lose a lot of hair in the process?”
So, what’s your take? Are braids protective? Which do you experience less breakage with? Braids, weaves or Ghana weaving?
