2015 HAIR REGIMEN – My flat iron regimen

For a background information, this is a description of my hair:

  1. Relaxed hair. I leave my relaxer on for 15 – 20 minutes before rinsing it off. This time includes the application AND the smoothing time.
  2. High porosity. This means that my hair easily absorbs moisture but also loses it easily. If you have low porosity hair, it means that your hair doesn’t easily absorb moisture but when it does, it retains it longer.
  3. Fine hair strands. In simple terms, this means that the diameter of my hair strands is narrow.
  4. Low density hair. Hair density refers to the number of strands of hair found on your hair. It is usually genetically determined but reduction in hair density might be the result of ageing, chemicals, etc.

I do not regularly flat iron my hair and if I am looking for a sleeker look, I opt for a rollerset instead. If I want a really sleek flat-iron result, I will just have a stylist do it for me (with proper protection).

I am outlining my flat-iron regimen to give a full idea of my entire regimen.

Take note that natural oils have not been scientifically proven to protect the hair from heat although some people do use them e.g grapeseed oil is used because it has a high smoke point. An oil with a high smoke point means it needs a very high temperature for visible gaseous vapour to become obvious.

On wash days, no matter what products I use, these are the steps I usually follow:

  1. ‘Prepoo’
  2. Cleanse
  3. Deep condition.

Friday nights

PREPOO

  1. Moisturize my hair with L’Oreal matière & densité conditioner. This supposedly helps to thicken hair . Seal with hempseed + coconut oil mix. Apply Lavender Jamaican black castor oil to my scalp.
  2. Wear a shower cap. Go to bed.

Saturday morning

  1. CLEANSE my hair, preferably with a shampoo.
  2. DEEP CONDITION using a conditioner which has silicones in its ingredient list. My preference is Paul Mitchell Super Skinny daily treatment. Rinse this out.
  3. Apply PHYTO PHYTOLIUM 4 drops to my scalp. This helps stop shedding.
  4. T-shirt dry or use my Turbie towel for at least 30 minutes to soak excess water from my hair.
  5. Apply my leave-in conditioner followed by a heat protection serum (which also helps to seal in the moisture). I don’t use oils to seal when I flat iron because they  do not protect from the heat of flat irons and may actually cause more harm than good.
  6. Detangle my hair properly with my wide tooth comb.
  7. Air dry
    • Put my hair in a bun.  If I am going out, I usually just leave my  hair in this bun.
    • Leave my hair to dry naturally.
    • In the evening, flat iron in very small sections. I detangle again before passing the flat iron through each section. The flat iron that I use is: the Babyliss i pro 230 steam. It is a titanium ceramic flat iron which emits steam and has very small ‘teeth’ on the heating plate.

 Extra notes/maintenance:

I am not very particular about making my hair very straight when I flat iron at home. If I want very straight results, I think I’ll go to a salon. In addition, I still moisturize and seal my flat ironed hair if it feels dry during the week because I don’t mind if it doesn’t remain straight.

I’ll be back on Monday with more on my regimen. I just want to break it down slowly so you get the full picture. Have a great weekend people!
