Rollersetting to get silky texlaxed hair.

Before I started my hair journey, I always used to have silky hair. However, it was very ‘light’. I started my hair journey in the quest for thickness which has improved but in my opinion still haven’t fully attained. I think that the only things that have helped my fine hair strands so far have been:
  1. The JBCO family; and
  2. Intentionally under-processing my hair (otherwise called ‘texlaxing’).
Well, back to the story.. I love air drying my hair but my ’texlaxed’ hair frequently looks like I’m not sure if I’m natural or relaxed. Some people ask me if my hair is natural and some others ask me if I need to do a touch-up. When I really want a more polished look, I roller set my hair.

By the way, roller setting can give your hair bounce especially if you have fine or low density hair like me.
Plus roller setting can help you stretch between relaxers.

The problem is it takes me almost 90 minutes to 2 hours to finish rolling it so I have decided to get it done by a professional. 😛

Anyways, if you decide to roller set your hair at home, I want to give you a few tips I have learnt:
  1. To roller set your hair, it is important to detangle your hair thoroughly. Start with a wide-tooth comb. Next, use a medium-sized comb before using a small-toothed comb.
  2. Deep condition your hair before you roller set. Roller setting your hair can cause breakage because you are combing through it thoroughly.
  3. Don’t use too much product if you want bouncy hair.
  4. Your hair should be wet when rolling it so that it comes out smooth. If it gets dry while rolling, re-wet your hair with water.
  5. Try to roll as tight as possible so that your hair gets stretched.
  6. Don’t take out the rollers till your hair is completely dry.
  7. You can air dry your hair but it does take a longer time. If you are using a standing dryer: to reduce heat damage, start with the lowest temperature setting. After 20 – 30 minutes, you can increase the temperature of your dryer and sit another 40 minutes – 1 hour depending on how thick your hair is and what leave-in products you used. When your hair is dry, take off the rollers and change the temperature setting back to the lowest setting and sit for another 10 minutes. Cool air helps to seal the cuticles.
  8. To preserve your roller set during the week, go to bed with flex-rods or satin rollers. Or pin curl your hair. Or wrap it. In the morning, your hair is nice and bouncy again. I find that I usually don’t need to moisturise my hair for 2 to 3 days after I rollerset my hair. By day 3, I apply Hairveda red tea daily moisturizer very lightly on my hair and cross wrap my hair at bed time. I seal with argan oil in the morning.
