How to build a hair regimen: products to buy

Hi everyone. Today, I will be continuing my series on building a hair regimen. Please read the first part in this series HERE.

Before I purchase any product, I do a lot of online research. I read the ingredients but more importantly, I read reviews. My favourite places to read reviews are from hair blogsWalgreens.com, Drugstore.com, Amazon.com, Sally’s Beauty, and Naturally Curly.  YouTube also has a good number of video reviews.

At the end of the day, however, deciding which products to purchase is still not always easy. In my opinion, there is a lot of trial and error. I have discovered that what some people rave about doesn’t always work for my hair. On the other hand, little-known products sometimes work. I have used some products which I loved in the beginning and ended up disliking it later. There are some I hated on first impression and never used again too. On the other hand, I have had bad/so-so impressions of some products and I fell in love with them later…and so on 😛

I think I have talked too much! 🙂 So, what products do you need to build a hair regimen?

  1. Oil(s):
    • Carrier oils. You can buy one oil to serve different functions (or as many oils as you wish):
      • As a pre-shampoo oil: I recommend coconut oil but any other absorbent oil (e.g olive oil or avocado oil). You can use it on its own or mix with your conditioner.
      • As an oil rinse.
      • To seal moisture into your hair.
    • Essential oil(s).
      • To soothe your scalp e.g tea tree and eucalyptus oil.
      • Aid hair growth e.g rosemary and lavender oil.
      • Hair treatment (edges, thinning hair) e.g rosemary, thyme, cedar wood, etc.
  2. Cleanser(s):
    • A weekly shampoo or cleansing conditioner.
    • You can also get a clarifying shampoo to use when you feel your hair needs a more thorough wash.
  3. Deep conditioner(s):
    • Protein conditioner (optional) – Learn more about protein conditioners HERE.
    • Moisturizing conditioner – to use on its own or after your protein conditioner.
  4. Leave-in conditioner
  5. Hair moisturizer
  6. Combs
  7. Satin bonnet/scarf/pillowcase

    Just discovered your blog and I’m enjoying!!! I’m checking out your Product reviews because I think you use great products with awesome ingredients.
    I too read several different forums of reviews before I make any hair purchases above $10. Amazon.com and target.com are some great places to read reviews also
