Relaxer day update (7 weeks post): 11th September 2015

Hi people!! Yes I relaxed my hair at 7 weeks post-relaxer!! I think I was tired of under-processed hair and I had had enough. I called my stylist to come over and we got down to business.
On a side-note, if/when I do decide to go natural, I will probably do a big chop immediately. No transitioning for me. Don’t know if I can handle two textures.

PRE-RELAXER

1. Sectioned my hair into 6. One on the left side. One on the back. Two horizontal sections on the right. 2 tiny sections around the hairline.

2. I detangled my hair (maintaining the sections) from root to tip with a moderate protein conditioner, Aubrey Island Naturals conditioner. I used a protein conditioner to strengthen my hair for the relaxer process.
3. Applied Vaseline all over my scalp, paying special attention to my edges.

RELAXER PROCESS

Relaxer used: PHYTORELAXER INDEX 1 (FINE HAIR)
1. Applied the relaxer to the middle sections first. These were the most under processed areas. Next to the left section, then the back section. Lastly on the edges.

2. She went back in to smooth in the relaxer.

3. Applied a conditioner to the ends of the hair to protect them. I had planned to do this before the smoothing process but I actually remembered it when she was smoothing the relaxer.

4. When it was 15 minutes, I literally flew to the bathroom.

5. Poured my Linange Neutralizing conditioner on my hair first. I did this to kickstart the neutralizing process.

6. Rinsed my hair thoroughly. Reapplied the Linange Neutralizing conditioner to my hair. Left it on for about 5 minutes. I could actually feel and see little white calcium deposits on my hair. Strange but this is the first time I am noticing this. Maybe, it’s from my water supply or this is because this is the first time in a long time that I did not mix the relaxer with ANYTHING. LOL

7. I have been longing for darker hair so I decided to try something different. I applied a dark coloured conditioner called Giovanni Colorflage Conditioner, Boldly Black for about 2 minutes. Rinsed it out.

8. Washed my hair with Mizani butter bath. This is a neutralizing, chelating and clarifying shampoo.

AFTERCARE

1. Applied ORS Hair Mayonnaise to my hair. I picked this conditioner because firstly, it is a good moderate protein conditioner containing hydrolyzed collagen, egg and cholesterol. I used to like it a while back (before I started my hair journey) and it always gave great results. My only qualms with it is that it contains several silicones and mineral oil. This time around, I decided to forget about the rules and do what I felt my hair would like. I covered my hair with a shower cap and sat underneath my standing dryer for about 20 minutes. I allowed my hair to cool down and then rinsed it off with lukewarm water.
2. Applied a moisturizing conditioner (Shescentit Avocado conditioner) and left it for about 5 minutes before rinsing it out.

imageI am very happy with the results. Perfectly relaxed to my taste. Not under-processed and not overprocessed either. Going forward, my plan is to:
1. Continue to use the relaxer undiluted.
2. Keep the relaxer in for a maximum of 15 minutes.
By the way, my cousin was over at my house last night and she convinced me to get a minor trim, she actually mentioned that weber do primer too and those are amazing news for me because I’m thinking about changing my house tiles. Pictures coming soon.

I’ love the texture of your hair and it definitely looks darker. It must have been really hard to manage all those textures…

    Hello Doc,

I know exactly what you mean, as I feel the same way. I will most likely do a big chop when I finally decide to go au naturel. Two textures is such a hassle,

Last year I had to do corrective relaxing over my ends because I always had inconsistent degrees of under-processing on texlaxing days and various textures as a result of this.

The sad part was that because of the different textures, there were several demarcation points along each hairs strand causing breakage.

I like how you still managed to retain volume even after relaxing. 🙂
