Backstage hair diaries #3: In love with the blowdry!

The Backstage Hair Diaries is an attempt to document my journey to find a hair regimen that suits me. I am looking for a regimen that pleases me with regards to aesthetics, hair thickness, hair length and ease. I don’t mind being experimental with my hair until I find something that works.

My most recent experiment has been to wash my hair once every 2 weeks and then blow dry my hair mid-week with cold air. I try not to go more than 5 days between each blow dry because I notice breakage if I wait any longer than this. I love this new ‘experimental’ regimen because it makes my hair so manageable. I plan to do this till April and then reassess.

1. I spray a little ‘Phytostim Fortifying spray’, ‘Phytotraxil Anti Thinning spray’ or ‘Puressentiel Anti-Hair Loss Treatment serum’ on my scalp first. Afterwards, I massage my scalp.

2. Next, I moisturize and then cover my hair with a shower cap (‘baggy’) my hair for about 30 minutes with heat.

3. When I take off the shower cap, I seal the moisture with a small amount of a heavy oil e.g castor oil then blow dry. Initially, I was using a comb attachment but I felt that although the breakage wasn’t alarming, it could lead to my hair thinning out. During my most recent mid-week baggy session, I used the ‘tension’ method of blow drying but modified it a bit by using a brush to hold my ends taut and tight.

4. After blow drying, most of the time, I use flexi rods or rollers for about an hour to keep the roots stretched and to give the hair a little bounce.

4. To prevent buildup, I only use products not containing silicones during the mid-week ‘baggy’ sessions and I do not moisturize or use any oil until the next blow dry. This also helps to prevent frizz and reversion.

5. I do not comb my hair between blow dry sessions: only finger combing. I use a brush lightly or small comb to smooth out the top if necessary.

6. I try to keep my ends off my shoulders as much as possible.

7. I wear a satin bonnet or scarf at bedtime.

8. I wash my hair every 2 weeks. If I stay too long between washing, I am scared of developing dandruff, product buildup or breakage.

Now a peek into one of my ‘baggy’ sessions done on 6th October 2015.
On the wash day prior to this, my leave-in conditioners were protein packed so I decided to focus on using moisture-rich products on this ‘baggying-blowdry’ day.
1. Sprayed my scalp with Puressentiel Anti Hair Loss Treatment Serum (this is a recent buy).
2. Applied a generous amount of Pura Body Naturals Murumuru moisture milk to my strands.
3. Dampened my hair with Shescentit Tahitian and Coconut leave-in conditioner.
3. Wore 3 shower caps over my hair to really trap in the moisture.
4. I sat under my standing dryer for 20 minutes. I have stopped using my dryer for my mid-week baggy and now, I use my heating cap for 30 minutes only.
5. Sealed with castor oil when I took off the shower cap.
6. Blow dry using a comb attachment and cold air. This usually takes me about 45 minutes to an hour. Sprayed each section with Shescentit moisture mist prior to blowdrying. Minimal breakage. Not looking for sleek. Just stretched manageable hair. I no longer use the comb attachment for every blow dry but the tension method as I stated above.
